The Illinois Institute charter

Illinois Institute

In 1855, the state of Illinois granted a charter to the Illinois Institute. At this time, the school had 140 students, ranging from first grade through college. By the next year, enrollment jumped to 270, including 100 elementary students, leading the school to lease part of the building to the Wheaton Public School District.
