The Illinois Institute building

Early Struggles

The school encountered struggles common to new organizations, including the succession of one leader after another. John Cross served as first leader for five months. His successor Charles Winship was head of the Institute when the upper floors of the building were finally finished, which included 14 dorm rooms on the third floor, each able to accommodate four students. Winship, who established the custom of Tuesday evening student prayer meetings and Friday evening literary meetings, left the position after one year.
