The Idea Is Born

In 1850, members of the Wesleyan Methodist church in Wheaton, Illinois, pastored by Reverend John Cross, determined to establish a school aligned with the ideas of temperance, abolition, and opposition to secret societies. At the 1850 Wesleyan denominational conference in Batavia, Illinois, they decided to form such a school.
