Blanchard, Charles
Charles Blanchard was named president of Wheaton College after the resignation of his father, Jonathan Blanchard, in 1882. A graduate of both the Academy and the College, Charles was brought up with the ideals and values of his father. Charles first worked as a teacher at several schools before becoming principal of Wheaton Academy in 1872. Three years later, he was named vice president of the College. When his father’s health forced him to retire in 1882, Charles took over. He served as president of Wheaton College for the next 43 years.

During that time, Blanchard transformed the campus. During a ten-year period in the late 1890s, the campus constructed additions to its main building (now Blanchard Hall), a women's dormitory (The Red Castle, today’s Williston Hall), a gymnasium, heating plant, and an industrial building (Schell Hall), which eventually housed the Academy. In a single year—1898—Blanchard’s fundraising tripled the size of the College endowment.

Blanchard also maintained his father’s commitment to Wheaton College and Academy as a place of Christian faith and education. He wrote the Statement of Faith, which is still an integral part of the Academy’s mission.
